Watch "Map the Music" documentary feat. Rachael!

You can now watch Samantha Hale’s documentary “Map the Music” on the Documentary Channel! I have no idea how long it’ll be airing/streaming so check it out while you can. You can also go here to purchase the dvd.

After the death of her father, music lover and filmmaker Samantha Hale sets out on a road trip to try to explain the power that music has over people, following some of her favorite artists from concert to concert around the country. Through interviews with legions of devoted fans and the incredible artists who inspire them, she tries to uncover the mystery behind the music while struggling with her loss. Artists include Imogen Heap, Kate Havnevik, Zoe Keating, Rachael Yamagata, Cary Brothers, Charlotte Martin and Jim Bianco, featuring unreleased concert performances and behind the scenes footage with some of the most unique musicians in independent music.

News Roundup

I’m sorry, ya’ll. I’m so behind on Rachael news! My life is ridiculous right now. Anyway…

Yamagata plays parts of artist, business person
”’[The music industry is] certainly in a huge state of transformation right now, so for me, it’s extremely liberating to not be on a record label anymore,’ she said. ‘And I’ve already seen the evidence of what I’ve accomplished by being at the helm of this ship, and I’m lucky enough to have a great team that’s working with me.’” (via The Portland Press Herald)

Soulful indie songwriter switches sound
“Ditching heartbreak for hope, songwriter Rachael Yamagata, whose indie blues-rock music has been featured on TV shows such as ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ finds a new voice on her newest album while keeping her soul…Accent Editor Kelsey Fowler spoke with Yamagata about her new album, her songwriting style and upcoming tour.” (via The Ithacan)

CONCERT: Being on her own brings Rachel Yamagata success
“‘It’s become like my own musical reunion with myself,’ Yamagata explains. ‘I chose to just say, “Who (cares)” and go back and have fun with music. I’ve got nothing to prove to anyone anymore. You can either remain positive and keep doing music or quit. And I don’t want to quit, really.’” (via Daily Tribune)

Yamagata returns to World Cafe
“Wild applause and shouts welcomed Yamagata to the stage. Yamagata performed all of the songs on her new album in addition to older songs. Most notable was her natural demeanor and casual performing style, which evoked deeper elements from the album’s tracks, reaching into the true depth and devotion that went into each piece. The audience was moved to dance, cheer, sing along and even fist pump.” (via The Triangle)

Music Review: Rachael Yamagata - Chesapeake
“An album about love, especially an album about the addiction of love, can easily slip into cheesy territory. With Chesapeake, however, Yamagata’s honesty (‘Full On’) proves intoxicating and her joyfulness (‘Saturday Morning’) is addicting. Thanks to well-crafted songs and a voice to die for, her latest is delicious optimism.” (via Blog Critics)

Rachael's Top 5 Reasons Why She's Still Single

Rachael took over the 365 Reasons Why I’m Still Single Facebook page last week and gave them her top 5 reasons as to why she’s still single. My favorite:

Rachael’s Reason #4 “Why You’re Still Single” (based on her prior experience of being single) - “You’re a terrible cook and sometimes forget to eat and not everyone agrees a glass of wine is proper nutrition.”

I swear I thought I was the only one! I’ve been workin’ the Hostess cupcake/wine diet for a good while now. I’m such a bad cook that I honestly forget to eat sometimes. And worst of all, there’s really nothing I can do about it. I’ve shadowed people who can cook, taken cooking lessons, even followed recipes to a ‘t’. Or so I thought. (Seriously, how can it be that *every* dish you cook comes out looking like wet cat food? How is that even possible?)

News Roundup

Hear Rachael Yamagata’s New Album, ‘Chesapeake’
“Admittedly I was not amped at the prospect of listening to Chesapeake at 7am this morning, the time that I usually set aside for music writing. Rachael’s past releases, Happenstance and Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart, are not 7am records. They’re 11pm records after a hard day and a couple of vodka tonics. But Chesapeake is not really like that. For the most part, its songs are hooky and hopeful. It’s anytime music, and I think you’ll dig it.” (via Autostraddle)

FOX411 Playlist: Tori Amos Makes Billboard History and More From the Week in Music
“Another young artist who is releasing new music is the soulful Rachael Yamagata. She sat down with FOX411 to dish on how she took an unorthodox approach to producing her latest album ‘Chesapeake.’ She ditched the formal studio album and says she ‘got this house and converted it into a studio and pitched tents and made dinners and tracked at weird hours of the night.’” (via FOX; clip starts around 1:15)

Soundbites: “Chesapeake”
“While ‘Chesapeake’ lacks the powerful attitude woven into ‘Happenstance,’ it has a buoyant tone that showcases a woman who seems to have found her sense of wonder once again. The album spans from hopeful tunes such as the opening track, ‘Even If I Don’t,’ to lamentations over losing a lover who couldn’t commit in ‘Full On.’” (via Daily Bruin)

Classics & comebacks
“Not quite as high-profile, though equally deserving is the richly hued, smoky-toned singer and melodist Rachael Yamagata, restoring female pop’s good name with her just-out ‘Chesapeake’ (Frankenfish, B+). The work’s been inspired by time spent on the waterway and by the love of her fans, who funded the project in just a week for Yamagata’s own label.” (via Philly.com)

Rachael Yamagata’s Third Album, “Chesapeake,” a Genre-Mixing Success
“Still, it’s unlikely that Chesapeake will be her breakout album. Yamagata has existed under the radar for a few years, scoring a bit of radio play with Happenstance along with appearing on albums by Rhett Miller and Bright Eyes and even showing up in an episode of ‘30 Rock.’ However, she’s far from a household name. Still, being where she is in her career, she can make an album like this one, in which she doesn’t need to conform to any specific genre. Fame may bring in the big bucks, but if freedom creates an album like this, it’s nothing to frown upon.” (via The Daily Texan)

Yamagata shows Philadelphia love
“At World Cafe Live, Yamagata played numbers from her previous album, ‘Happenstance’ (2004) and performed songs from ‘Chesapeake’ such as ‘Starlight’ and ‘Miles on a Car.’ A couple times between songs, Yamagata noted that in ‘Chesapeake’ there would be ‘happier’ songs. She stated that positive or cheerful songs were a bit difficult for her in the past, as she worried they would seem ‘fake.’ In spite of this, Yamagata displayed an air of humble cheerfulness that charmed audience members and made her performance warmly pleasant and openhearted. Yamagata tweeted on her webpage shortly after the performance, ‘Philly! … Love to u and XPN!’ Yamagata will be returning to the World Cafe Live on Oct. 31 for another Philadelphia performance.” (via The Triangle)

ALBUM REVIEW: Rachel Yamagata “Chesapeake”
“From song to song, Yamagata writes with a maturity and intimacy that is not often found among contemporary pop artists. Those familiar with Yamagata’s music already know that she puts just as much soul into her lyrics as she does into her vocals. If you’re looking for a poppy, upbeat album, perhaps Rachael Yamagata’s newest album isn’t for you. But for fans of honest, mellow and soulful music, you certainly can’t go wrong by giving ‘Chesapeake’ a listen.” (via The Telescope)
