Rachael performs live in The Current Studio

Rachael recently did a great interview and performed a gorgeous acoustic set featuring “Even If I Don’t,” “Dealbreaker,” and “Starlight” for Minnesota Public Radio’s Current Studio. She also did a set back in ‘08 that you can listen to here.

Oh, and JFC, that voice!

Jazz singer Monika Borzym covers Rachael’s “Even So” for her debut album!

I learned via Seattlepi.com today that Polish jazz singer Monika Borzym covered Rachael’s “Even So,” among many other songs from great women artists, for her debut album entitled Girl Talk which is now streaming in its entirety on Soundcloud.

In an interview on her website, she stated, “Matt convinced me not to record the standards. For being just 20, I wasn’t going to sing the pieces of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan better than they did. He persuaded me to take on songs by contemporary artists and show them in our climate, filter them through our jazz sieve. It took us a long time to find the songs. Finally, we decided that the key to the search and the idea for the album generally would be songs sung by women alone. We were very keen to choose from among those vocalists with plenty of charisma, those whose songs count in the contemporary music world.”

Seattlepi.com described Ms. Borzym’s cover as “a smoky ballad delivered with understated passion.” I was initially resistant to it but have since grown to really like it. It sounds beautiful in headphones and evokes an entirely different atmosphere than I’m used to.

What do you all think of her cover?

twentyfourbit:

Rachael Yamagata - “Even If I Don’t”

From last month’s menacing “Starlight” to this upbeat cut off her forthcoming third LP, Chesapeake, Rachael Yamagata’s reinvigorated confidence on this set comes across as incredibly endearing in a way that recalls her debut, Happenstance. Her sophomore record, Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart, still stands as a vital progression into heartbreaking, fragile territory, but here’s to optimism and — for lack of a better term — a comeback.

The album, which features the iPhone-shot cover photo shown above, is due in October.
